It has been sometime since the last refresh of this site and I think it was overdue. My goal is to provide a richer experience for my clients by updating this I.T. News section regularly.

The Orthotrac users meeting for 2013 has just finished. The 3 days proved a great success with many commenting on the valuable knowledge gained.
Networking with other Orthotrac users also proved invaluable and a resource for many practice managers to use going forward. Now the fun begins, implementing all that new found knowledge!!

As many know, Windows 8 has been less than a success. It has an 'unfinished' user-interface which makes it difficult for most to use.
What about its big brother, Windows Server 2012? Server 2012 is a great product and offers so much to small business from a security and reliability perspective. The big improvement comes with Hyper-V, Microsoft's virtualisation technology. Hyper-V is like a really smart middle-man between your physical server (the box) and the operating system (Windows). What Hyper-V does is to allow you amazing flexibility and great performance by having your servers run on this virtual envrioment.
You can copy your entire server to another server in a matter of hours.
You can use Hyper-V replica to stream the changes on your server to a backup server every 5 minutes, allowing restoration of your failed server in less than 15 minutes with a maximum of 5 minutes of lost data.
You can consolidate multiple servers onto 1 box, for example your Orthotrac Server and your Terminal Server can now both live on the same physical server.
These are just some of the fantastic technologies that are coming from this new Server release. Please feel free to contact me for more information.

To go to the Cloud or not to go to the Cloud?
The Cloud seems to be the buzz phrase in computer circles recently. Many of my clients wonder how moving some or all of their data to the cloud will benefit them.
Currently the cloud is valuable for certain non-core operations in your business, such as outsourcing email hosting or web-hosting. Email is vital to your business, no doubt, but if you cannot access your email for an hour or two, business still goes on. Imagine not being able to access patient data, process payments or other key business functions. This is the problem we face when we put key data systems in the cloud.
You see the cloud is only as useful and reliable as it's weakest link. Unfortunately internet connections in Australia are still prone to occasional outages - the weak link!
So until Fibre Optic is in place and affordable, moving your key business systems to the cloud, like Orthotrac, could prove very problematic.
The time may come to move all your data to the cloud, but it is not now!
